INTERNATIONAL STUDENT MINISTRY

I'm very excited to announce that upon my return to Sydney, I will have a change in ministry focus!

During my first term in Sydney, I was the director of the City Sanctum workers' ministry. I enjoyed the ministry, and believe in the dual goals of 1) equipping Christians to be competent workers, and effective evangelists in a work-world that is often hostile to Christianity, along with 2) being a non-threatening place for workers to bring their workmates where they can be exposed to the hope of the gospel.

Upon my departure from Sydney in May, my City Sanctum committee took on primary leadership, with me assisting online from a distance. They have done excellent work to the point that the Session of the church asked them to continue leading in order to free me up to focus on university ministry.

During my first term in Sydney, I helped out with "Student Outreach to the World" (SOW) by speaking periodically at weekly meetings as well as teaching at missions training and summer camp events. Engaging with university students was one of the most rewarding aspects of my work.

The church Session has asked that I focus on developing an outreach to international students. With SOW chapters at four universities, internationals comprise 20-50% of the student bodies, many of them coming from China, as well as other countries that are difficult for missionaries to reach.

I'm very excited about this new opportunity, and looking forward to involving our church members and university students in this exciting new ministry!

HMA is NOT a Vacation!

Every missionary periodically spends some time back "home." These furloughs, or as MTW calls them "Home Missionary Assignments" (HMAs) are not vacation, but involve different work. What does that look like? For me, I'm keeping busy with:
  • Training of new missionaries, leading them online through various coursework in preparation for work on their respective fields.
  • Recruitment of new missionaries
  • Reporting back to supporting churches
  • MTW committee work (healthy teams initiative)
  • MTW Asia-Pacific member care
  • Readiness Evaluation assessor for new MTW applicants
  • Involvement at my home church -- teaching Sunday School on missions, choir, Bible study, growth group, men's book discussion
  • Maintaining connections in Sydney
  • Raising additional support
While HMA is not the primary work of a missionary, it is critical to the ministry, and critical to promoting the future of missionary work.

Visa Update

I anticipate that Harbour City Church will be able to apply for sponsorship in the next few months. This is necessary for them to sponsor my visa.

However, the church was recently notified that their lease will not be renewed for another year, and will need to vacate in several months. Finding a new venue is an important priority and may delay progress in the sponsorship application. I remain hopeful of a late summer departure.

Prayer Points

Praise God for three new partnering churches (Mississippi, Michigan, Georgia).

Pray for God's grace on upcoming travel, including flight to Edmonton, Alberta later this week.

Pray for the new international ministry I'll be developing in Sydney -- that God will use it to draw many to salvation, and for those students to take Christ to their nations.

Pray for the process of gaining a visa to return to Australia later this year.

Pray for Harbour City Church as they have lost their lease and need to find a new place for worship.

Support Update

During my first term in Australia, my budget was supplemented by excess one-time contributions and previously unused budget monies to the tune of about $1,000/month. With those funds now depleted, and inflation decreasing the value of contributions, while simultaneously increasing ministry and life costs, I am in need of raising up additional support from new sources as well as increased support from current partners.

I am currently in need of an additional $1,335 per month in pledges.

Would you consider joining my team of ministry partners, or perhaps increasing your current level of giving?

To make a contribution, or to change your level of giving:
  • Follow this link to contribute on the MTW website. Above my name, you can choose "recurring;" then you can indicate how often you would like your contribution to recur.
  • Or if you prefer a less technical method, email me or email Cara Christiansen at MTW. Tell us how much you would like to pledge on a monthly or annual basis.
I'm posting this on January 6, but this update is from August 29, 2025.

Stateside Service

I've been stateside now for nearly four months, and it's been flurry of activity:

KINGDOM FOUNDATIONS: After spending a week of June at MTW headquarters with 21 new missionaries in training, I am serving, along with another missionary in the Jackson area, as a cohort leader for seven of those new missionaries. We meet every two weeks online to discuss courses they are taking online, to pray, and to encourage as they raise up a network of supporters.

RECRUITING: I joined other missionaries from my region at the PCA General Assembly in Chattanooga in late June, spending our time connecting with pastors, ministry leaders, and families. Please pray that God will call some of these people to serve as long-term missionaries in Australasia.

In July, I recruited at the MTW East Coast Missions Conference in Centreville, VA; and I anticipate recruiting at seminaries across the southeast US during the fall semester.

CHURCH PARTNER VISITS: Recent missionary visits to partnering churches include Chattanooga Valley PCA in July, and Bryce Avenue PCA in Los Alamos, NM just last week. BAPC was celebrating their 50th anniversary; it was there that I spent my first year after college teaching in their Christian school. They were my first exposure to the PCA. I learned this past week that they left the mainline Presbyterian church in 1975 because of the Wynn Kenyon case, in which Kenyon was denied ordination because of his views on the ordination of women pastors. Kenyon went on to be ordained in the PCA and to teach for many years at Belhaven University, and was an elder at my church in Jackson.

Support Update

With one church joining my ministry team (pending approval of their session), I am currently in need of raising an additional $823 in monthly pledges.

Did you know that since I first joined MTW in 2009, the US dollar has lost about one-third of it's value? A partner giving $100/month in 2009 is now giving the equivalent of about $67/month.

I am so thankful for my many ministry partners, and feel some guilt for asking for more; but would you consider increasing your contribution by 25%, or perhaps even 50%? I know that some are not able to do that, but perhaps that is something you could do. Would you please prayerfully consider increasing your monthly or annual contributions in order to send me back to the work to which God has called me in Sydney?

Or perhaps you've been receiving my newsletters for many years and praying for my work. Thank you! Your prayers are critical to the work of the gospel in Sydney! But perhaps you would like to also partner with me financially.

To increase your contributions, or to begin financial partnership, select one of the following options:
  • Contribute on the MTW website. Above my name, you can choose "recurring;" then you can indicate how often you would like your contribution to recur.
  • Or if you prefer a less techie method, email me, or if you prefer to be an anonymous partner, email Cara Christiansen at MTW. Tell us how much you would like to pledge on a monthly or annual basis.
THANK YOU for your prayers and your faithful financial partnership. You are an indispensable part of this ministry team.

Surgery Thursday

I would appreciate your prayers on Thursday, September 4, as I am having out-patient surgery to remove a polyp from my left nasal passage. For many years I have dealt with significant congestion. I finally sought medical advice this past summer, having a Cat-scan last week revealing a polyp completely obstructing the left nasal passage.

I'm told it is very likely benign, but will be tested for cancer.

Prayer Points

Praise God for safety over many miles traveled and flown in recent months.

Praise God for three churches that have expressed interest in partnering with me in the work of the gospel. Pray that God will provide through them.

Pray that Harbour City Church's application materials to sponsor visas will soon be submitted and approved quickly, and that I'll soon be able to apply for a visa to return to the ministry work in Sydney.

Pray for Harbour City Church in Sydney. They will be hosting the National Assembly of the Westminster Presbyterian Church denomination September 13-17. This involves a great deal of work: logistics, meals and snacks, etc.

Pray for Harbour City Church and Pastor Jim Jung as he transitions out of his roles as pastor and MTW Sydney team leader to focus on his role as regional director for Australasia. This change will occur in mid-September, after HCC hosts the WPC National Assembly. Pray for the entire church through this process of losing their founding pastor, and for Sijin Yang, our Aussie Assistant Pastor, who will take on the role of senior pastor. Pray for him, as he is young and newly married as of August 8.

Pray that God will call many of his people to serve overseas to plant and support the work of planting new churches in Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific.
